Thatcher halted. "From here we go down into Lincoln, over to the west side, and through another service tunnel to the Corridor. Inside the Corridor we have fuel-cell wheeled vehicles ready. We have to cross Chicago to the north side, then get into the Corridor again to Milwaukee. Obviously we cannot be looking for owls inside." There was small laughter at this. "It's going to be late at night, and few people will be out in Lincoln. With luck we won't run into anyone, but the sensors and traffic monitors will be on. So we must once again look as if we are on business."

An ancient stone building marked the entry into the Lincoln Warren. A few hundred meters short of the building Thatcher paused again to hand out what appeared to be a variety of odd-sized cases from a hidden cache. "Musical instruments," he said. "We're returning from a concert. Walk straight ahead, as if in something of a hurry. It's late, and we all want to get home."

The took the drop shaft into Lincoln, walked across the central plaza, caught a linked cab across town and got off at the last stop.
