He speaks, it seems, across a gulf to her. He's trapped, stripped and bound while his captors laugh, piling brush around his feet. Tendrils of smoke twist before his face, and the first heat licks at his ankles. He's staked in a thicket where the sticks are dry and the leaves are dead. Weakness seizes his knees, and they bend, though he cannot fall, bound as he is.
